Spotify is often declared the king of music streaming services, but does it still live up to its reputation? Let’s get out our headphones and Bluetooth speakers, and give this music platform another spin.
What is Spotify? Spotify is a free digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. When Spotify started there were not many options for streaming music legally. Which allowed them to stand out from the crowd and grow at an incredible rate, even though with heavy hitters on the scene like Apple Music, Amazon Music and Google Play Music. Spotify seems to be doing quite well for itself.
Now let’s talk about the most important feature of any music streaming service, the music catalogue, here Spotify excels with over 30 million tracks available. Some exclusives as well. Other platforms seem to have caught up, but Spotify still appears to have more. The even added podcast to the service a couple of years ago, which has helped add even more content to the platform.
As for platforms and devices there everywhere, Windows, Android, iOS and macOS. Personal experience with Spotify’s web player and its mobile apps has been excellent. Admittedly I do not have a Mac computer to test it out on that platform. If you compare it to my experience on iTunes with a Windows desktop, it’s light years ahead. No matter what platform you’re on Spotify will have an app available.
Spotify does offer a paid service alongside its free version, and they call it Spotify Premium. For 9.99 a month you get the additional benefits of ad-free music, listen offline, high-quality audio, play any track, and unlimited skips. So, is the Premium service worth it? Absolutely, but bear in mind here in the UK it’s roughly 60% more expensive. My favourite Spotify Premium features are the higher bitrates and ad-free music streaming. It really makes a big difference.
So, what’s the verdict? Yes, Spotify is still the undisputed king of Music streaming. The only major gripe I have with Spotify is the small number of royalties they pay their artists. If that bothers you, you may want to look elsewhere. Besides that, Spotify still offers a great service on any platform and any device. I would strongly recommend Spotify to any fan of music currently shopping around for a good music streaming service.
